Fitness Series: Monthly Goals

As part of my New Year’s Resolutions, I’ve been giving myself monthly goals to help with my fitness goals. Some of the goals have included practicing yoga daily, making sure to stretch daily, eating a salad everyday, etc. I started off the year on a streak and, as life gets busier, I started slacking. I would do less than half the days in the month!

Typically, I’ve been posting my Fitness Series posts on the third Friday of the month but, since November ends on a Friday this year, I thought it would be appropriate to post it on the last day of this challenge.

I’ve been getting down on myself that I haven’t lost the weight I want to. I’m also not as strong or fit as I used to be which has been a huge deterrent for making the effort to use my gym pass. So, this month (November 2018) I made it my goal to go to the gym every day. I wasn’t going to have a set plan (i.e. go to yoga or have a specific workout in mind) but rather I just needed to show up. I’ve had zero motivation to go but I was going to be dedicated to this goal. (See my Motivation vs. Dedication post).

I haven’t noticed a difference in my weight but I’ve definitely noticed an improvement in my sleep and mood. I’ve been tired enough by the time I go to bed that I don’t toss and turn and I have way more energy during the day to get things done. It also made sure I made it out of the house even on days that I wanted to holed up and do nothing! Once I got to the gym I had no issues finishing my workout – it’s always been the getting there part that’s the issue!

I made it every day except two. The one day I needed to recoup and I feel good about taking the night to myself and the second (yesterday) I worked 16 hours and didn’t make it home before the gym closed. Most days I did cardio but I also went to a few yoga classes and some days I just went to stretch (after soccer or on rest days). (I even forgot my running shoes one day so did a wonderful foam roll session instead).

I honestly loved this challenge, even though it’s not practical every month (a lot of weekends I’ll be out of town or there will be days I’m out late with work). I feel very proud of myself for sticking to the goal and going on days that I know I usually would have skipped!
